Indicators of maternal infant health, including rates of preterm birth and low birth weight, infant mortality, and maternal morbidity and mortality, are basic indicators of the health of a population and its children. This section provides current and historical data on these key indicators.

Perinatal Health Status Highlight

Preterm birth is a leading cause of infant death and childhood disability. In 2012, 11.54 percent of infants were born preterm, before 37 completed weeks of gestation.
