Leading Causes of Death in Females (All Ages), 2000

In 2000, heart disease was the leading cause of death for females, representing 29.9%. The second leading cause of death for females was other causes (23.0%), followed by cancer (21.8%), cerebrovascular diseases (stroke) (8.4%), chronic lower respiratory disease (5.1%), diabetes mellitus (3.1%), influenza and pneumonia (3%), Alzheimer's disease (2.9%), and accidents/unintentional injuries (2.8%).
