EPA - Indoor Air Quality and School Performance http://www.epa.gov/iaq/schools/images/iaq_and_student_performance.pdf (283KB)
This EPA report discusses how indoor air quality (IAQ) affects a child's ability to learn. Authors note recent data suggest poor IAQ may directly reduce a person's ability to perform specific mental tasks requiring concentration, calculation, or memory. They state schools should be designed, built, and maintained in ways to minimize and control sources of pollution, provide adequate exhaust and outdoor air ventilation, maintain proper temperature and humidity conditions, and be responsive to students and staff with particular sensitivities such as allergies or asthma.
EPA - Indoor Air Quality: Tool for Schools Kit http://www.epa.gov/iaq/schools/tools4s2.html
EPA's IAQ Tools for Schools Kit shows schools how to carry out a practical plan of action to improve indoor air problems at little or no cost using straightforward activities and in-house staff. The kit includes checklists for all school employees, a flexible step-by-step guide for coordinating the checklists, an IAQ Problem Solving Wheel, a fact sheet on indoor air pollution issues, and sample policies and memos. In addition to the kit, the EPA, with the cast and crew of the television series This Old House, has produced a short video about how to properly operate and maintain ventilation systems in schools. The kit and video are free; they are available online and may be ordered from the IAQ INFO Clearinghouse (EPA document number 402-K-95-001). A CD-ROM is also available (EPA document number 402-C-00-002, August 2000).
