CDC's Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) is directed by Congressional mandate to perform specific functions concerning the effect on public health of hazardous substances in the environment. ATSDR serves the public by taking responsive public health actions and providing trusted health information to prevent harmful exposures and disease related to toxic substances. Web site sections consist of news, hazardous substances, emergency response, measuring health effects, hazardous waste sites, information sources, special issues, education and training, and publications. A section is also offered for various audience groups --children and parents, communities, health care professionals, ombudsman, Tribal affairs, and Western Europe. The site is available in Spanish. Creating Safe Learning Zones, a 2002 report by the Child Proofing Our Communities Campaign, finds 1,185 public schools in five surveyed States (Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Michigan, and California) are on or within ½ mile of a toxic waste site, putting over 600,000 students at increased risk of developing asthma, cancers, learning disorders, and other diseases linked to environmental pollutants. The authors propose model school siting legislation (which includes specific guidelines to help legislatures protect children's health) and outline action steps parents can take to protect their children.
