This article in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (April 2002) describes what schools can do to protect students from unnecessary exposure to UV radiation, thereby reducing their future risk of skin cancer. Recommendations for skin cancer prevention in schools are as follows: establish policies that reduce exposure to UV radiation, provide an environment that supports sun-safety practices, educate students on how to prevent skin cancer, involve family members in prevention programs, include skin cancer prevention in professional staff development, complement skin cancer prevention with school health services, and periodically evaluate implementation efforts.

The following tips should be maintained throughout the school year: begin the school sleep routine at least 1 to 2 weeks before opening day by introducing a gradual change in the child's sleep schedule, establish a regular bedtime and wake-up time, create a bedtime routine with at least 15-30 minutes of calm activities, achieve a balanced schedule, be a role model, and become a sleep advocate.

This 2001 survey report by the Kaiser Family Foundation, Generation Rx.com, discusses findings on how young people use the Internet as a health resource, their concerns about confidentiality, their opinions on filtering technology and online pornography, and new data on where and how often teens and young adults are going online. Some of the findings are as follows: 2 out of 3 young people (68%) have used the Internet to search for health information, 4 out of 10 (39%) online health seekers state they have changed their behavior because of information they found on the Web, most young people (82%) identify confidentiality as "very important" when looking for health information, the majority of teens support filters but teens are divided on the effects of exposure to online pornography, and nearly all teens have been online but race and class are still factors in access.

This report addresses the question of which standards K-12 students should meet, according to a Gallup Organization survey of U.S. adults. The survey featured the content standards in the Mid-Continent Research for Education and Learning database --standards from the organization's analysis of 116 national and State-level standard documents. Respondents were asked to rate the extent to which they believed each standard was definitely, probably, probably not, or definitely not necessary for students to master prior to high school graduation. Over 2,500 adults returned completed questionnaires. Americans consistently rated health information and work skills high on the list of content areas that "definitely" should be included in a K-What Americans Believe Students Should Know
12 curriculum.
