  Michael Kogan holds a Ph.D. in Epidemiology from Yale University. He is currently the Director, Office of Data and information Management for the Maternal and Child Health Bureau. In this position he is responsible for directing activities of the office with an emphasis on 1) maternal and child health research; 2) building the data capacity of federal, state and local areas in maternal and child health; and 3) building the maternal and child health epidemiology capacity in the United States.
  
  Prior to this position, he worked as a Senior Epidemiologist at the National Center for Health Statistics, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He serves on the editorial boards of the Maternal and Child Health Journal and the American Journal of Public Health. His research interests include: the effect of prenatal and pediatric care services on maternal and child health, the effect of lack of health care coverage on access and continuity of care, multiple births and determinants of preterm birth.

  Jay S. Kaufman holds a doctorate in epidemiologic science from the University of Michigan School of Public Health where he studied under Sherman A. James and held the Angus Cambell Memorial Fellowship at the Institute for Social Research. After a post-doctoral position with Richard Cooper at Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago and a position as a Medical Epidemiologist at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, he assumed his current position at the University of North Carolina School of Public Health at Chapel Hill. He is currently Associate Professor of Epidemiology, as well as a Research Fellow at the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research and a Fellow at the Carolinas Population Center. Dr. Kaufman is a social epidemiologist who studies the ways in which health status varies by race, class and other socioeconomic quantities. He currently focuses on analytic methodology and on reproductive outcomes, cardiovascular disease, and provision of health care in the United States. He is currently a visiting professor at the University of Chile in Santiago (Spring 2007) through a Fulbright Research/Teaching Fellowship, and in 2006-2008 is a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Scholar.
  
  Current projects include research on: social and community factors in the etiology of preterm birth in the US and in Chile; social position over the lifecourse in relation to incident coronary disease; racial/ethnic variation in effect of medical therapies, non-parametric methods for covariate control and identification of direct effects for social factors; and racial/ethnic disparities associated with provision of medical care. He serves as an editor of the journal "Epidemiology", an associate editor of the "American Journal of Epidemiology", and an executive editor of "Epidemiologic Perspectives and Innovations". He also edited, with J. Michael Oakes, the textbook "Methods in Social Epidemiology" (Jossey-Bass, 2006).
