Graduate Student Internship Program 2008 Catalog of Internship Opportunities This internship has been filled. MCAH Graduate Student Intern Program: Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health Programs Agency Information The intern will be housed in the Maternal Child and Adolescent Health (MCAH) Program of Los Angles County Department of Public Health. The intern will be assigned to the Research, Planning and Evaluation (REP) unit. Purpose, goals, and objectives of internship Los Angeles County (LAC) is the home of nearly 10 million residents and expands to an area of approximately 4,083 square miles. LAC with its large population and multicultural communities creates a unique environment and challenges in the provision of MCAH services. The LAC Maternal Child and Adolescent Health (MCAH) Programs strive to achieve optimal well being for all women, infants, children and adolescents and their families in LAC. To accomplish this mission, MCAH Programs conduct assessment, policy development and assurance activities on MCAH related issues, and provide leadership in planning, collaborate with public and private providers and community partners in developing and supporting comprehensive systems of preventive and primary care, and contracts with community based organizations (CBO). The purpose of the internship is for the intern(s) to gain exposure and experience in MCAH research and evaluation related issues. The intern can choose one or more of the following tasks: Los Angeles County Mommy and Baby (LAMB) Survey: L.A. Heath Overview of a Pregnant Event (HOPE) Survey: Perinatal Periods of Risk (PPOR) Approach: Data or analytic tasks and activities Depending on the intern’s skill, experience and interest, he or she may be involved in one or more of the following projects:

Supervisors Diana Liu, the Epidemiologist for the MCAH Program, will provide mentoring and supervision for this position. Ms. Liu has received a Master degree in Public health and has been working as the epidemiologist for the MCAH Program for almost 10 years. She has indepth training and knowledge in community needs assessment, program evaluation, MCAH program operations research design, and statistical analysis. For the past five summers, Ms. Liu has successfully worked with GSIP interns. Internship begins Although we would like to have the intern on board soon, the starting date is negotiable. Housing Rental assistance can be obtained by local real estate services. Transportation The MCAH program is located in a high security building and can be easily accessed by several bus lines and Los Angeles Metro Subway system. Back to top | |
