Analyzing quantitative and qualitative data in a real world setting has been very rewarding. It has allowed me to sharpen my data analysis skills while learning how to put data results into action. I believe that my project will aid in raising awareness about the challenges that still have to be faced in the fight to reduce infant mortality and morbidity rates.”

Overview

Provide technical assistance to states and localities while receiving training in a real-world MCH environment. Take the opportunity to address specific, defined data or analytic issues as part of the efforts of states, counties and cities to develop or enhance their MCH and Children with Special Health Care Needs information systems. Focus in any of three critical areas of MCH epidemiology: data analysis and monitoring, needs assessment, and program evaluation. Enhance the capacity of MCH agencies in collecting, analyzing, and using data for planning and policy making.

Project Areas

Data Analysis and Monitoring
Monitoring of diseases, injuries, and health conditions for their frequency, risk factors, consequences, and health service requirements, and analysis of epidemiological data sets.

REAL INTERN EXPERIENCE: analyzed PRAMS survey data to examine risk factors for low levels of postpartum physical activity in Oregon.

Needs Assessment
The systematic analysis, assessment, and projection of health needs and resources in a given population or community.

REAL INTERN EXPERIENCE: conducted an assessment of the availability of delivery services across the state of Oklahoma.

Program Evaluation
Monitoring, collection, and analysis of data to determine the effectiveness or outcomes of a particular program or project.

REAL INTERN EXPERIENCE: worked with the San Francisco Department of Maternal, Adolescent and Child Health to assess whether and how group prenatal care affects birth outcomes compared to standard prenatal care.

Eligibility

Master’s and doctoral degree candidates in U.S. schools of public health (accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health) are qualified to apply. Applicants must be enrolled in MCH or related programs that involve MCH studies and not graduate before the internship ends. Only U.S. citizens or foreign nationals who possess a visa permitting permanent residence in the United States are eligible.

Accepting Applications

The deadline for GSIP 2008 applications to be submitted has passed. Matches will be revealed in soon, but unfilled positions will be reposted in late March or early April, so please check back at that time.

Time and Stipend

The internship is to be completed over a 12-week period, to begin in May, June, or July 2008. GSIP interns will receive a stipend of $5,000 over 3 months to cover travel to the internship site, housing, and daily living expenses.
