ARTHRITIS
Arthritis is the leading cause of disability among women
in the U.S. Characterized by an inflammation of the joints,
rates of arthritis increase dramatically with age. In 2001,
women reported higher rates of arthritis compared to men
in every age group. The rate of arthritis was 91.6 per
1,000 population among women aged 18-44 as compared to
64.7 in
men of this age group. For women aged 45-64, the rate of
arthritis rose to 340.1 and to 617.3 for women aged 75
and older.
High rates of arthritis among non-Hispanic White
women may be largely accounted for by the older age distribution
of
this population.
