Problem:

Leadership training is needed to prepare graduate nurses to address the pediatric nursing and faculty shortage, health disparities, the growing prevalence of childhood chronic conditions, and improve services for youth with special health care needs and their families.

Goals and Objectives:

Goal 1: Develop MCH nursing leaders at the graduate level for pediatric faculty and clinical roles. Objective 1: After 3 years, 12 (4 per year) master's prepared nurses will have graduated. After 5 years, 15 doctoral (PhD + DNP) students will have graduated. Objective 2: Each year, at least 6 doctoral or master's students will participate in research or other educational activities with an MCH partner at the state, region or national level. Faculty will involve all trainees in research, presentation and publication activities relevant to Performance Objectives. Objective 3: After 5 years, at least 20 trainees will be practicing in clinical /public health and/or faculty roles. Goal 2: Provide innovative continuing education for nursing leaders regionally and nationally in the care of children with special needs and their families. Objective 1: Each year, conduct at least one Leadership Forum or conference. Objective 2: Each year, at least one continuing education (CE) activity will be co-sponsored with an MCH partner (e.g., Minnesota Department of Health- children; Center for Adolescent Nursing, and the MCH Nutrition Program in the School of Public Health at the U of MN. Objective 3: Conduct two needs assessments (one in Year 2 and one in Year 4) to identify CE needs. Each trainee will assist in providing at least one CE or technical assistance activity. Goal 3: Provide technical assistance and consultation to state health departments and Title V programs in the upper Midwest and other MCH-related education and research initiatives. Objective 1: After 5 years, faculty will have provided technical assistance (TA) to at least 10 state health and related MCH/CSHCN individuals in agencies /organizations. Objective 2: Each year, at least two new or revised MCH/pediatric clinical updates will be placed on the Center website. Relevant information and resources will be sent to all MCH nursing leaders in Title V programs at least monthly via the Center listserv. Objective 3: The Center listserv will increase its readership by approximately 10 new recipients each year from 200 to 250 recipients. Goal 4: Address health disparities by preparing graduate nurse leaders with MCH leadership and cultural competencies. Objective 1: By Year 5, at least 10 trainees (long-term and medium-term trainees) from ethnically and racially diverse backgrounds and/or rural areas will receive Center training. Objective 2: Each year, one to two trainees from rural backgrounds will receive at least 75% of their education in their home location. Objective 3: Within five years, all trainees will have clinical and community-based experiences working with diverse populations in rural or inner city locations.

Methodology:

In FY '10, there were 48 long-term trainees (7 PhD; 32 DNP's; and 9 masters); 7 of these trainees live/work in rural areas. Two PhD, 6 post-master's doctorate of nursing practice (DNP) graduates and 8 masters level students prepared as pediatric nurse practitioners (PNP) or pediatric clinical nurse specialists (PCNS) completed their leadership programs with a specialty in children with special health care needs in academic year 2010-2011. To date, the program has prepared 175 pediatric nursing leadership graduates since 1993. This year faculty instructed 1034 short term and 215 medium term trainees in Maternal Child Health-related lectures and courses from the following disciplines: Education, Dentistry, Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, and Social Work, Psychology. PNP/CSHCN graduates 5 years post graduation are in MCH leadership roles as clinicians, advocates and/or educators. Our center also partners with other MCHB funded training grants at the University of MN, including Diversity in MCH Training. The graduate programs prepare all students for family-centered, culturally competent and community-based care for CSHCN. Evidence-based practice is foundational in the curricula. This academic year, the faculty published 18 new publications related to MCH, provided TA/consultation on 35 topics to 4665 participants.

Coordination:

Faculty and trainees work on asthma, medical home and transition initiatives with the Minnesota Department of Health. The Center partners with MCHB funded training programs and MCH partners to provide CE and multidisciplinary training opportunities for trainees and Title V agencies.

Evaluation:

The Center courses and programs are evaluated by the Advisory Board, faculty peer review and trainee evaluations. Annual formative evaluation and summative evaluations and graduate follow-ups are conducted to evaluate project quality and goal attainment.

Experience to Date:

Trainees produced 2 dissertations, 19 presentations/posters, 2 publications, 5 awards, 3 grants, 18 workshops, 8 TA's and 5 precepted students. Two PhD, 6 post-master's doctorate of nursing practice (DNP) graduates and 8 masters prepared as (PNP) or (PCNS) completed their leadership programs with a specialty in children with special health care needs in academic year 2010-2011. To date, the program has prepared 175 pediatric nursing leadership graduates since 1993. This year faculty instructed 1034 short term and 215 medium term trainees in Maternal Child Health-related lectures and courses from the following disciplines: Education, Dentistry, Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, and Social Work, Psychology. Ann Garwick and Linda Lindeke are PhD advisors to 3 American Indian medium term trainees. PNP/CSHCN graduates 5 years post graduation are in MCH leadership roles as clinicians, advocates and/or educators. Our center also partners with other MCHB funded training grants at the University of MN, including Diversity in MCH Training. The graduate programs prepare all students for family-centered, culturally competent and community-based care for CSHCN. Evidence-based practice is foundational in the curricula. This academic year, the faculty published 18 new publications related to MCH, provided TA/consultation on 35 topics to 4665 participants.
