Iowa children, youth, and families face a number of challenges in receiving mental health care including a shortage of child psychiatrists and other mental health providers, lack of access to specialty providers, and access barriers to care for rural Iowa families. Over 52% of Iowans live in a county classified as a Mental Health Professional Shortage Area.

Project Description

According to the 2016 National Survey of Children’s Health, there are approximately 128,468 Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs (CYSHCN) in Iowa. In essence, 17% of Iowa families include CYSHCN. Of these, 41% live in rural areas of the state, and 59% are at or below 400% of poverty level even though 89% have a family member with at least a High School Diploma or GED. About 27% are inadequately insured, and 10.5 % are Spanish-speaking. Iowa families of CYSHCN and the professionals who serve them are targets of Family to Family Iowa with special emphasis placed on low-income families, rural and geographically isolated families, and English-language learners. Family to Family Iowa is a statewide, community-based project independent of any system. It builds partnerships between families of CYSHCN and the professionals who serve them to impact the overall health outcomes of CYSHCN.

Project Description

Iowa children with/at risk for Autism Spectrum Disorder and other Developmental Disabilities (ASD/DD) face a number of challenges receiving timely and appropriate screening, evaluation, and diagnosis. Although there are significant gaps in resources available to children and youth with ASD/DD in rural aras, most of Iowa's larger cities also include medically underserved areas. There are an estimated 12,394 Iowa children with/at risk for ASD/DD, 78% of whom reside in a count that has at least one medically underserved area.

Project Description

The Des Moines Healthy Start Project at Visiting Nurse Services of Iowa, dba EveryStep, serves individuals and families who have high risk factors for poor maternal and child health outcomes. The target populations served are black and multi-racial, nevertheless services are not denied for any race. Case management services provide perinatal, postpartum, child health, and child development education and connections to needed resources in the community. In addition, participant and family support is offered to pregnant or interconceptional people, children under the age of 18 months, and families who reside in the project's zip codes. Services address factors that contribute to poor perinatal and maternal outcomes, poor infant health outcomes, health disparities, and maternal/child well-being. The Des Moines Healthy Start Project's Community Action Network (CAN) is composed of community based agencies that address either maternal, paternal, or child well-being.

Project Description

There are roughly 220,000 emergent ambulance transports annually in Iowa with approximately 5% of those calls for pediatric patients. An average of 23% of all emergency department visits were for pediatric patients over the past five years. The most common reason for pediatric emergency visits are injury and poisoning followed by respiratory system disorders. The Iowa Department of Public Health assists in preventing injury and illness in pediatrics by providing technical assistance and resources to Emergency Medical Services personnel, hospitals, schools, emergency preparedness partners and others as well as helping to ensure trained and equipped medical professionals are available to treat pediatric patients.

Project Description

The Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) Program supports the delivery of coordinated and comprehensive high-quality and voluntary early childhood home visiting services to eligible families living in at-risk communities. The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), which administers this program in partnership with the Administration for Children and Families, funds states, territories, and tribal entities to develop and implement evidence-based programs that best meet the needs of their communities.

Project Description

Although Iowa's EHDI system of care is developed, it is not yet coordinated effectively among providers. Primary care providers, ENTs, and some audiologists do not routinely implement best practices, including care coordination and culturally appropriate family support resulting in children being lost to follow-up and/or not served in a timely manner therefore delaying early intervention and family support services.
