Division of Home Visiting and Early Childhood Systems (DHVECS)

We improve the health and well-being of pregnant people and families, particularly those who have been historically underserved. We give families, communities, and states resources to help make sure children are physically, socially, and emotionally healthy.

Our Maternal, Infant, Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) program connects families with health, social services, and child development professionals. Our Early Childhood Systems (ECS) programs help health systems and early childhood systems work together more effectively.

Key Accomplishments

In FY 2021, the MIECHV Program:

  • Delivered home visiting services in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories
  • Served 140,000 parents and children and provided more than 920,000 home visits
  • Screened 81% of caregivers for depression within three months of enrollment or three months of delivery
  • Screened 76% of caregivers for intimate partner violence within six months of enrollment

In FY 2021, through our ECS work, we:

  • Strengthened cross-sector partnerships, planning, and policy in 31 states
  • Increased the use of coordinated strategies to screen for and respond to child development and family health concerns
  • Improved access to preventive health services and treatments for children and families in the child welfare system
  • Supported federally-funded early childhood programs to work more effectively with each other and with families
