Access to nutritious foods like fruits and vegetables improves maternal health, fetal development, and recovery after birth. The MP3 program supports community-based organizations to develop produce prescription programs that help pregnant and postpartum women in low-income and medically underserved areas access fruits and vegetables.
How do produce prescription programs work?
Produce prescription programs enable health care providers to write prescriptions for fruits and vegetables that patients can redeem at local food access points, like markets, grocery stores, farmers, and mobile food services. Over the past decade, these programs have emerged as an effective way to help improve patients’ diets and reduce food insecurity.
Through partnerships with health care providers and food access points, MP3 awardees will create or expand community-based produce prescription programs and provide nutrition education to pregnant and postpartum women.
What support is available to awardees?
The Center for Nutrition & Health Impact (CNHI), a non-profit research and evaluation institute, will serve as the MP3 Training and Evaluation Center (MTEC) through a collaboration between HRSA and USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture. Specifically, CNHI will provide MP3 grantees with training, technical assistance, and evaluation and reporting support tailored to produce prescription programs serving pregnant and postpartum women. CNHI is in its 8th year leading the Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program (GusNIP) Training, Technical Assistance, Evaluation, and Information Center (NTAE), which has built national systems for shared measurement, reporting, and continuous learning across nutrition incentive and produce prescription programs.
Current MP3 awardees
In FY 2026, HRSA awarded approximately $13 million to 27 awardees.
