The Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) facilitates pediatric emergency care research to improve outcomes for acutely ill and injured children. Research is most impactful when study designs and populations reflect the nation's racial ethnic geographic and economic diversity. STELAR contributes uniquely and critically to diverse studies and patients thereby rigorously and productively supporting PECARN's success.
Goals and Objectives:
Our overarching goal is to improve quality of care and outcomes across the continuum of emergency care for all children.
We will:
- Design/implement innovative research with a special focus on Health Equity
- Engage and collaborate with EMS agencies to further prehospital research initiatives
- Successfully enroll subjects with racial ethnic geographic and economic diversity
- Develop early-stage investigators to be future leaders in pediatric emergency/EMS research
- Disseminate results so best practices are implemented in academic and community settings
- Participate fully in all PECARN activities and execute all the network's mandates
Leadership/Capability:
Seattle Children's Hospital will be the RNC collaborating with HEDAs at the University of Texas Southwestern and Children's Hospital Los Angeles. The EMS affiliate will be at the University of Washington in Seattle. All site PIs bring expertise in research mentorship education and clinical care. All sites have large and diverse patient populations and strong established research programs. STELAR enrolls patients from urban and rural catchment areas with diverse populations in the West and Southwest drawing from Latino African American Asian Pacific Islander and Native American populations.
Activities:
STELAR will continue to productively enroll in studies follow the highest standards of research and demonstrate leadership in all PECARN functions. We will continue to obtain grant funding support innovative ideas execute protocols and disseminate study results.
Coordination:
All sites have the infrastructure and administrative support to continue to contribute value and diversity to PECARN. Experienced coordinators facilitate high study enrollment. Teamwork and communication ensure standardization across sites to support novel research ideas and expedite knowledge translation and dissemination of results. Mentorship of early-stage investigators has and will continue to expand nodal leadership in PECARN.
Evaluation:
We will monitor a) number and type of proposals submitted to PECARN b) grant submissions c) grant funding obtained d) dissemination of results and e) participation at nodal and PECARN meetings. We will maintain productivity through a) steady high enrollment of diverse subjects b) continuous quality assurance and c) broad dissemination and implementation of evidence-based practices in pre-hospital academic and community ED and clinics settings.
Anticipated Outcomes:
We will continue to have high enrollment of diverse subjects at all sites disseminate and implement study results generate innovative and pragmatic research studies that are federally funded and develop early-stage investigators. We will continue to contribute to the data registry and add a second site to the EMS to ED data linkage.
Summary:
STELAR is a productive experienced collaborative that serves diverse populations and geographic areas. All sites have strong research & clinical programs. STELAR is uniquely positioned to continue to elevate research and contribute to the ongoing success of PECARN.
