Abstract

Introduction:

The successful development, monitoring, and evaluation of public health investments andmaternal and child health (MCH) programming depends on the availability and use of valid andreliable information given the diversity of target populations, their complex needs, and the scopeof related MCH programs. In this context, doctorally-trained MCH epidemiologists are critical. MCH epidemiologists must be skilled in a diverse array of analytical tools, conceptual frameworks, and implementation science methods to enhance the ability of state and local MCH programs to carry out the core functions and essential services of public health.

Methodology:

To address the growing need for highly-skilled public health professionals in MCH Epidemiology, we propose a supplemental program (USF Center of Excellence in MCH - MCH Epidemiology Doctoral Training Program), which has a two-fold purpose:

  1. Implement a specialized comprehensive and collaborative public health academic program for future 21st century leaders in MCH Epidemiology; and
  2. Promote the advancement in applied MCH research and evaluation through the support of doctoral students who conduct state and/or local level analyses on MCH topics of national relevance as the basis for their dissertation research.

Goal 1: Provide financial support to five doctoral students who conduct state or local level analyses on a public health topic important to MCH populations as the foundation of their dissertation over the 5-year project cycle.

Goal 2: Educate selected doctoral students in current and emerging topics in MCH epidemiology, data collection, surveillance systems, advanced quantitative methods, and frameworks relevant to state and local MCH populations and programs Goal 3: Strengthen the MCH evidence base through publication of dissertation research in peer-reviewed journals.
